Gardena 4019 16-Inch Hi Cut Reel Mower Review

I bought this mower because I also bought a townhouse that has a realatively small yard. I didn't want or need a big, expensive, noisy mower. Most people who review reel mowers write about 'going green' and helping the environment. While that is a noteworthy benefit, it was not my reason for buying one. I wanted a mower that gave me exercise, was easy to use and maintain and will (hopefully) last for many years because of its simplicity. I received this mower today, attached the handle, adjusted the blades and started mowing. This mower is advertised as a 'contact free' mower, but found out the blades and bedknife do have to touch for optimum performance. Not a big deal to me, but it is worth mentioning. The blade adjustment is really easy to perform and check. Just adjust the bedknife until the blades are lightly touching and you're ready to mow. I was very surprised at how well this mower cuts. The area that I mowed was mostly weeds and it plowed through it with no problem. One thing to note. Don't make the mistake I did. I used the mower wheels as a guide for making my passes. When I was done, there were uncut strips of grass. You must overlap your passes a little just because of the gap between the end of the reel and the mower wheel. Once I corrected that, I was left with a very nice finished cut. Very impressive. I did a lot of research before purchasing a reel mower and after reading all the reviews, I didn't know what to expect. I am glad I purchased this mower and look forward to many years of use from it.

From my experience with this mower today, I can say that I think the most important thing with this mower is the blade adjustment, which is very easy to do and check. When it is correct, this mower's performance will be impressive. The height adjustment is also very easy to make and check as there are tick marks with corresponding munbers (in inches) next to them.

To make this review complete, I should state that I live in Maryland and I think this mower would work well with grasses in the northern part of the US. I don't know how it would do with southern grasses like St. Augustine, etc which are much thicker and denser. I hope this helps.
