Tanaka Commercial Grade Gas Powered Straight Shaft Grass Trimmer / Brush Cutter 32cc 1.6 HP 2-Stroke (CARB Compliant) TBC-340PF Review

I bought this trimmer a year ago (2010) to help me maintain 80 acres of grass, weeds and brush. It has worked very well and I'd buy another one. There are, however, a few small design flaws.

1. The Starter cord is located just a little too close to the carburetor. If you are not careful you can skin your knuckles as you start up. I have pretty big hands - so maybe this is not a problem for others. The solution is to remember to pull the cord at a very very slight angle.

2. The on/off switch moves in the opposite direction than intuition would suggest. That is, you pull the slide switch up to start and push it down to turn off. This is probably a safety feature, but it took some getting used to.

3. The grips are too thin. Again, I have big hands, so this might just be me. I'd like a little thicker grip.

The trimmer came with a full head of string that I used. I was not very happy with the machine while I was using the string and I almost returned it. Anyway, the string eventually ran out and I reloaded with Stihl green square line. What a difference! It is like a different machine. So, dump the string that comes with the machine and get some Stihl. The Stihl line is relatively new, so you might have to look a little for it. The lousey line is the reason I didn't give five stars.

The balance of the machine is at least as good as any other trimmer that I have used. Which is to say that it is not great. What are you going to do when one end of a bar has an engine and one a light spool? Once you get into that sort of swaying rhythm it is fine and better than many.

The machine is tough. It has been banged around in the pick-up bed and has not suffered. I particularly appreciate that Tanaka placed the choke in such a way that it will not be busted off.

The engine starts right away even on cold days. The gas tank is the right size. By the time you need to fill up you will be ready for a break. Well, at least I am always ready for a break when the tank runs dry.

Like most gas trimmers this one is a little loud. I wear hearing protection ALWAYS so this is not such an issue. Vibration on this machine is very low compared with other machines.

I was a bit wary about buying the Tanaka because I had never used their equipment before; I was going to get an Echo. The owner of the saw shop, however, recommended this machine. He was right. Thanks, Brad!
