Ariens 946152 173cc Gas 22-in Walk-Behind String Trimmer Review
This is a well designed walk-behind string trimmer, and I am generally very satisfied with it. It was delivered to the front of my garage in a big box, which I cut away. It was all assembled, so I just needed to unfold and tighten the handles. After reading the manual, I added the motor oil that was enclosed, put some gas in it, and it started on the first pull. The Kohler engine runs smoothly and is relatively quiet.
For trimming around the lawn, it does a very fine job. It also works well in the garden for trimming weeds that have gotten out of control, so they can then be tilled under.
It has its limits however. When getting into wilder, overgrown and uneven terrain, you have to watch what you are encountering. I ran through several sets of strings as I learned to recognize its limits. Let me explain. We have 2 acres, and we were hit by an EF1 tornado over a year ago. Our back acre, behind our barn, has many downed trees and limbs. It is part woods and part lawn. I was not able to mow parts of it last summer, and so weeds, briars, wild grape vines, thistles, and small saplings had gotten a good start over the past year. Weeds were waist high or taller, and I did not have time to deal with them until this summer.
First lesson: small saplings and downed branches over a quarter inch in diameter win every time, and so if I got up against them with the trimmer spindle, the strings on the trimmer would break, and needed to be replaced. While replacement is relatively simple, I went through several sets of strings until I learned what to avoid (if I could see it, in the tall weeds). So I was using a combination of heavy duty tree loppers, a chain saw, and the Ariens ST622 String Trimmer--depending on what I ran into. The worst experience I had was I ran into wild grape vine about a quarter inch in diameter that I did not see under the tall weeds. Not only did it break the strings, it wrapped itself around the spindle of the trimmer very tightly. I needed to use needle nose pliers and a wire cutter to get those wild grape vines unpeeled. As I said, this was a wild and wooly mess left behind from the tornado.
I find that the Ariens protected me well from flying debris. Much better than I expected, actually. Part of the rubber shield on the right side has come loose a couple of times (slipped over a bolt), and the rubber shield is a little chewed up now (from some of the heavier stuff I ran into--small sticks and big blackberry briars). When the rubber shield slipped over a bolt, I just got a socket wrench to loosen the bolt and stuck it back through the hole that attaches the shield to the metal frame. I have been working in temperatures between 85 and 95 degrees. I imagine that I will need to replace the rubber shield at some point, but I would much rather do that than suffer from blackberry thorns stuck to my shins and ankles, or to get poison ivy or oak on my legs.
The engine is plenty powerful, and that was never a problem. It handled all the waist-high weeds without straining when running at full throttle.
All in all, I am very satisfied with this trimmer and expect to use it for many years. This Ariens walk-behind string trimmer replaced my 20+ year old push mower, which I had been using for trimming, and the mower was no match for the wild weeds in the back acre, nor was my 12-year old 42-inch lawn tractor. I prefer to buy quality, well-engineered machines and maintain them well to make them last. I expect to do the same with the Ariens, a fine addition to my lawn and garden equipment.Ariens ST22 String Trimmer
