The Oregon 82-512 is a spindle assembly for MTD that fits 46-inch decks and uses star hole blades, along with a single pulley. This part is the right hand spindle and center spindle for 800 series riders from 1993-1996. It includes an Oregon 98-057 blade and uses Oregon 82-259 bearings and 85-046 spindle shaft. It replaces MTD parts 618-0111, 618-0116, and 918-0116.

The price is right and I was able to make this product work well. Having a new pulley installed on the top is great. It would be a real bear to try and get the old pulley off of a rotating spindle.

A couple of things you should know: 1) In the event of hitting something like a tree stump with your mower, the ears on these spindles are designed to snap before your mower housing can bend. As such they are made out of a soft metal and they're hoping you will install it with some tight fitting threads. I don't know what the OEM products are like but the housing on these is very soft. I didn't find self-tapping flange bolts, so I used a simple thead cutter (about $14). It's important to only cut threads about 2/3 of the way deep and leave the rest of the hole uncut. This will give you a very snug fit when you tighten the screws. If you tap the whole thing, you will strip out the metal (because it's soft) before you get a sufficiently tight screw. 2) You'll want to use Grade 8 flange bolts just like the bolts you're replacing. My big box hardware store didn't have Grade 8 (high tensile steel) but Ace Hardware did. You need this kind of bolt to handle the vibration. I used a medium screw-locking glue as well, which was handy since one of the bolts started to yield like it was on the way to stripping out.

Only one of the three spindles I ordered came with a blade. The corrugated box they came in looked like a cardboard sack by the time it arrived, so I'm thinking the other two blades fell out of the battered box. That's OK. Most of us have blades. The star-shapped blade-gripping splines on one of the three spindles I ordered was a little oversized and none of my blades would fit on that spindle without using 3 or 4 well-placed blows with a hammer. Filing it some probably would have worked too.

Be aware that takes a week or so for them to ship. I sent an email through Amazon and that may have helped too.

Bottom line: It's great to be able to restore an old mower deck and these spindles are probably getting scarce. Not perfect but the price is pretty fair. Take care during your installation though. You want the spindle to have a tight, binding connection with the bolt, without stripping the soft metal out, and you want to use the right kind of bolts. If I had it to do over again, I would have ordered a spare one to cover any mishaps, but mine are working well.
