Yard-Man 12AVD39Q701 21-Inch 160cc Honda GCV Mulch/Side Discharge/Bagging Gas Powered Self Propelled Lawn Mower with High Rear Wheels Review

I just ordered this model and it was delivered about 11 days later via UPS. I bought it because of the 160cc GVC Honda engine. I had a Honda self propelled mover that never failed to start over a 5 year period. I've owned several mowers in my 54 years and have never had that kind of track record with the american manufactured engines.

This mower also has the standard features of bagging or mulching; But when the grass is thick and wet this side discharge feature is nice to have. Side discharge is not available Honda brand mowers I've seen.

The web picture attached caused me a bit of confusion (the picture is of a single speed model) the model number for the VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE is "AVD" so verify the model number has "AVD" in it if not then that mower may be single speed. This mower's cluch handle for controlling the variable speed drive is V shaped handles at the center of the hand grip so you can control with either Left or Right Hands. The LARGER rear wheels are also a plus.

Assembly was a snap, just follow the procedures (oil, 4 bolts, gasoline, and tighten 2 tie wraps). If your a handyman that don't follow the procedures...here's a tip, the handle bars pull/slide out of the mower deck about 8 inches to put the handlebar carriage bolts in. It sumped me for a few minutes, (the wheels were in the way of the holes). Initial startup took about 5 chokes to get the fuel into the lines after that it started up first pull every time while mowing my lawn.

An aditional feature that I didn't know of until it arrived; all four wheels adjust for height by a knob like handle on the left side. No need to adjust each wheel. Very nice feature.

This blade is much heavier than the original Troy-Bilt mower blade. You can tell that the design of the blade produces a great amount of lift cutting the clippings over and over as they are being mulched. I could find the 22" model at Lowes and Home Depot, but neither carry the 21" blade. The grass is cut evenly and finely. Great blade.

The parts recieved are NOT shear pins. The items recieved look nothing like the thumbnail posted for the item or the real item from the Ariens dealer. Some smarta#@ at the supplier went to the local Ace Hardware and bought some regular ungraded bolts as a substitute. Shear pins are specially designed with a shear zone (appropriate to the application) to guarantee they will shear before the parts being protected can be damaged. Kind of expensive bolts for my hardware bins.

I purchased one of these belts in July 2009 and it has provided good service for 3 years until July 2012 before breaking.

Actually the belt did not go out on it's own. One of the idler pulley bearings wore out, the pulley seized up, and that ate the belt.
